A while ago China had finally lifted its ban on video game consoles. The two biggest companies were quick to jump on the opportunity. Some days later, Microsoft announced that it had partnered with a Chinese company to bring the Xbox to the country, and now Sony has confirmed that they will be bringing the PlayStation 4 and other Sony consoles to China as well.

Sony will be partnering with a Chinese local company called Shanghai Oriental Pearl Culture Development (we’re sure that name sounds better in Chinese), which is part of the Shanghai Media Group. Sony and OPCD will create two separate companies in China, one to manage the PlayStation 4 hardware manufacturing and distribution, and another to manage the software and game side of things.

This smart move may be one of the reasons why Sony expects to sell 10 million PlayStation 4 consoles by April 2015

The new software and games in China will be led by the newly formed Sony Computer Entertainment Shanghai, which will port games to the Chinese market and/or develop new ones specifically for the Chinese gamers.

As expected, PlayStation 4 games in China will be subject to heavy censorship, just like any other media content. Sony has yet to announce when the PlayStation 4 and other Sony consoles will launch in China. First, they have to get through all the bureaucracy and get the proper certification (and censor any content that doesn’t sit well with Chinese authorities).
