These are games that we have been waiting for a long time!
Let’s start with System Shock 3, which has a somewhat complicated development history – in February, Starbreeze, who are in financial ruins, gave back the rights to OtherSide Entertainment, the devs, to save money. They have created a teaser trailer for this year’s Game Developers’ Conference, GDC 2019.
The thirty-five-second video is pre-alpha, in-game engine (Unity) footage, which seems to have the antagonist (SHODAN) show up in it as well. We don’t know the release date yet, but it’s in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It even has Warren Spector (who was the producer of the first System Shock for example…) involved.
The other long-awaited title is Oddworld: Soulstorm, the reimagination of Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus (PS1/PC, 1998; GBC, 2000). As this game also uses the Unity engine, unsurprisingly, it also showed up during Unity’s keynote, just like how System Shock 3 did. This teaser trailer is from a cinematic, showing a train that gets attacked…
„Witness Abe’s horrifying conflict with a terrifying new machination. A fresh narrative—a complete story retake inspired by our original tale. A big visual and cinematic leap aiming to break new ground for Oddworld. Intelligent new mechanics, twisted new devices enabling highly explosive deviousness. A dark parable that tells an epic tale of a volatile society pushed to its limits,” the game’s website says.
The two other Oddworld: Soulstorm videos break down the visual effects of the cinematic, and there’s a comparison of the Shaman’s rendering technology as well, respectively. Unfortunately, Oddworld: Soulstorm has no release date yet.
Both games have been on our radars for a while – may them be the start of the GDC 2019 coverage.
