Let’s talk about the console itself first. After the bomb of the official first information of the next-gen console exploded yesterday, Peter Rubin, who wrote its article on Wired, revealed a bit more on Twitter. He asked Mark Cerny how the The next-gen PlayStation will have some limitations in its games.Let’s talk about the console itself first. Still, what about the PlayStation 5 price will go (even if the console isn’t called as such yet). He responded: „I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set.” Then, Rubin asked back: „Meaning that it may cost a bit more but what you’re getting is well worth it?” „That’s about all I can say about it,” Cerny responded. Not bad. We have yet to see how the pricing will fare – with the PlayStation 4, the 400 dollars/euro launch helped against the Xbox One, which cost 500, thanks to the Kinect bundled to each console back in 2013… thus, our guess will be 500 euro now. ResetEra thinks the same.
Wall Street Journal wrote about how Sony started to impose limitations on games with sexual content because they are afraid of the #MeToo Twitter-movement (related to sexual harassment). „Sony is concerned the company could become a target of legal and social action. We don’t have criteria in written guidelines or that sort of thing because the policy was introduced kind of suddenly in the wake of the #MeToo movement,” a Sony spokesperson told WSJ. „Sony has] responsibility to our users as a platform holder. [It’s] so that creators can offer well-balanced content on the platform and [gaming] does not inhibit the sound growth and development [of youngsters],” another spokeswoman added.
Wall Street Journal also says that several developers are disappointed in this change, and since the games can pick up a bit more sexual orientation in Japan (as their culture doesn’t mind it!), the local developers are afraid that their creativity might hit barriers, and they also pointed out a lack of written ruleset, too. „You don’t know what they will say until you complete the work and submit it for review. And if they are not happy, even if they allowed the same degree of sexuality a few days before, we need to take it back and ask our staff to make adjustments. That’s very costly,” a CEO of a small Japanese dev studio said. „What they’re saying to us is basically go find a niche somewhere else,” an executive from another team added.
So is Sony starting to censor heavily now? Are they taking Nintendo’s former role over?
