It’s been a long time since Baldur’s Gate II’s base version came out (that was in September 2000…), and now – although a different dev team is behind it – the sequel is coming!
Indeed: this time, it’s not BioWare developing the new Baldur’s Gate. Instead, it is going to be Belgian Larian Studios (who worked on mostly the Divinity series so far – their newest game is Divinity: Original Sin II), who has done a massive expansion, tripling their headcount, to work on this game.
„Created in close collaboration with the Dungeons & Dragons team at Wizards of the Coast, Baldur’s Gate III is based off current D&D mechanics and spells and is the official new chapter in the legendary series. Baldur’s Gate III will push the boundaries of the RPG genre and offer a rich narrative with unparalleled player freedom, high-stakes decisions, unique companion characters and memorable combat. It is Larian Studios’ biggest production ever and will be playable together with friends or as a single-player adventure.
The teaser trailer shows a return of a malevolent presence to Baldur’s Gate, intent on devouring it from the inside out, corrupting everything that remains in the Forgotten Realms. Alone you may resist, but together you can overcome. Gather your party,” the press release says.
The twist here is that the game was officially revealed during Google Stadia’s stream yesterday. (The stream itself went to 144p quality every ten seconds, usually following up with an error…) Don’t worry, though: Baldur’s Gate III will not be a Google Stadia-exclusive title! Larian will release it on Steam and GOG as well, and only then will they consider an Epic Games Store release, according to their representative on Twitter.
So, Baldur’s Gate III, for Google Stadia and PC. We don’t know when the game will launch, but at least it has a website, which you can find here. As we have been waiting for a long time for it to happen, we hope it will be worthy of the franchise’s name.
