Although the next-gen Xbox (which we call Project Scarlett for now, as it’s its official codename) and PlayStation (which for the lack of an official name will be called the PlayStation 5) will launch less than a year after Dying Light 2 hits the shelves, Techland doesn’t think it would have an impact on them. In fact, they think the other way around.
Techland kept adding new content to Dying Light even last year, which was a respectable approach by the Polish developers. The team wants to follow the same method when it comes to the sequel, too! „We, right now, can confirm that we are going to support it [Dying Light 2] for years! There are many consoles out there with the current generation so we believe that they are not going to be scrapped just after the release of the new generation of consoles. There’s going to be many consoles out there that will still need support. Players will still use the current generation consoles so the market is going to be as big as it is right now. There’s not going to be fewer players,” Kornel Jaskula, a producer from Techland, told DualShockers.
With this move, Techland figuratively flipped the bird at both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Scarlett, as the PS5 has been confirmed to have backwards compatibility (meaning it will likely support Dying Light 2 as well), and even the Scarlett has been officially hinted at supporting all previous Xbox generations by Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox himself. They believe in the current install base (the PlayStation 4 alone is close to a hundred million sold units – we’d even bet money on Sony announcing this shortly).
Dying Light 2 is out in the Spring next year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
