Leonardo da Vinci’s widely known painting was recreated in Super Mario Maker 2 with only Super Mario World sprites being used…
A Reddit user posted about something that nobody probably even attempted to do (or even think of doing it). Something that we have never seen before: this user took the sprites of a launch title of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (the SNES) from 1990, Super Mario World, available in Super Mario Maker 2, and the result is the following:
How did this person manage to pull this feat off? Here’s the answer: „I made a program that takes an image, a set of sprites from [Super] Mario Maker 2 and outputs the same image but approximated using the sprites of the game. Currently its[sic] only using the tiles from the airship level.” The used program is called Python 3, and if you are interested, you can get it from here and perhaps give it a try yourself, before Nintendo will likely come in and goes „MUH CEASE AND DESIST!”, something that they have done to Super Mario Bros. Battle Royale, which was barely active for two weeks. The source code is planned to be more accessible, allowing easier forking, meaning it could be modified and improved further by other users down the line. Here’s the original picture without editing:
Super Mario Maker 2, which is basically a level editor game, has seen 2+ million course uploads (most of them average or worse, but some of them are outstanding!) in two weeks – an average of 180 thousand uploads each day. No wonder the Nintendo Switch-exclusive game was on the top of the physical game sales chart for two weeks in the United Kingdom!
