Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, told IGN (via WCCFTech) how they plan to make Sam Fisher return – he was mostly ignored in the past few years aside from a Ghost Recon: Wildlands guest appearance, and an appearance in a mobile strategy game (Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad).
„When you create a game, you have to make sure you will come with something that will be different enough from what you did before. The last time we did a Splinter Cell [that would be Splinter Cell: Blacklist in 2013, available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC – the ed.], we had lots of pressure from all the fans saying, ‘Don’t change it; don’t do this; don’t do that.’ So some of the teams were more anxious to work on the brand. Now there are some things and some people that are now looking at the [Splinter Cell] brand; taking care of the brand. At one point you will see something but I can’t say more than that. Also, because of Assassin’s Creed and all the other brands taking off, people wanted to work on those brands more. so we have to follow what they like to do,” Guillemot said.
The CEO of Ubisoft also got interviewed by a Chinese publication called Gamersky, which we detailed here. (Don’t forget: they consider the Chinese market as an important one, and not just because Tencent, a Chinese tech giant, having stocks in their company…) Ubisoft is experimenting on multiple devices to see how Sam Fisher, the protagonist of the Splinter Cell IP, works, and the return could happen at the right time maybe even with a previously rumoured VR game that could be exclusive to the Oculus Rift and the Oculus Touch. (This is unofficial for now.)
So Ubisoft is planning something, but we’re afraid that the return would be different from our expectations. Just think of Beyond Good & Evil 2, which is a next-gen title (as a PREQUEL to the first game) with no release date yet – it’s far from what we would have liked after one and a half decades. History might repeat itself with Splinter Cell’s revival, too.
