Shigeru Miyamoto wants to see Mario being capable of bringing the fight to Disney when it comes to popularity…
Although Mario is known in gaming, the moustached plumber cannot be called a multimedia superstar, though. That’s why Universal Studios Japan is expanding with Super Nintendo World, plus Mario is getting a film at Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me; The Secret Life of Pets…). However, Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario (who effectively saved the gaming industry in the West, while also doing the groundwork for Nintendo’s success) wants to achieve more.
„Many parents want to keep their children from playing video games, but these same parents have no problem allowing them to watch Disney movies. So, we cannot seriously challenge [Disney] unless parents start feeling comfortable about their children playing Nintendo. [Mario’s strict consistency] cramped his style. I’m interested in creating greater opportunities for a larger audience to enjoy [the Mario universe],” Miyamoto told Nikkei in a recent interview.
In other words, Miyamoto wants Mario to be known as much as Mickey Mouse is. However, Disney is a gigantic company today, and even Nintendo is small in comparison. Still, the big N can pick up the gloves against the mouse empire, especially if Nintendo returns what they did in the late 80s and early 90s. Back then, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World both got a cartoon series, plus there was also a Super Mario Bros. film (although it was panned back in the day). In these products, Mario’s character was far more detailed than what we have seen in most video games that featured him.
So Nintendo has the experience, and they probably have the cash to spare thanks to the success of the Nintendo Switch. They just need a bit more quality this time.
