id Software‘s game, Doom Eternal will not include any microtransactions, and the reasoning behind it is blunt.
Hugo Martin, the creative director of id Software, revealed the reason on a somewhat unusual place – instead of talking about it in an interview or a video, he said the following on Facebook: „[There will be] No store. Nothing you can unlock in DOOM Eternal with XP has anything to do with player abilities or content that would impact your game in any way. The only thing you can unlock with XP is cosmetics. These cosmetics have no impact on how you play, they just look cool. DOOM Eternal is a $60 game, not a free-to-play game or a mobile game – we are giving you a complete experience with no store just like you’d expect. Unlocking skins with XP is a part of the experience if you care about that stuff or you can completely ignore it and it will have no impact on your experience at all and it’s all free,” Martin said.
Martin’s comment throws shades at mobile game developers or even Activision Blizzard. We shouldn’t expect the id Tech 7-using game to ask us every corner to buy in-game currency to defeat the demons much easier. Instead, we should learn the game’s mechanics as fast as possible, or else Doom Slayer will die. A lot. (We previously wrote about this, as well as the id Tech 7 engine’s advantages, the platformer sections, and the Switch port.)
We should also quickly mention the Battlemode, too: „A new 2 versus 1 multiplayer experience. A fully-armed DOOM Slayer faces off against two player-controlled demons, fighting it out in a best-of-five round match of intense first-person combat,” id Software says.
Doom Eternal is out on March 20 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC. Pre-ordering gets you Doom 64, also available from March 20. Panic Button’s Nintendo Switch port of Doom Eternal is coming at a later, unknown date, but they aren’t that much behind in development.
