James Cooper, who formerly worked at Naughty Dog, revealed that Nathan Drake’s (presumably…) last adventure had an unusual game as inspiration.
„[I’m] excited to hear about Crysis Remastered, I have fond memories of working on the original console [PlayStation 3, Xbox 360] port [launched in late 2011]. Its sandbox approach to gameplay later became hugely influential on my ‘wide-linear’ level design in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and beyond,” Cooper wrote on Twitter. We recently wrote about Crysis Remastered in detail.
In a reply tweet, Cooper also added that „it’s an underrated shooter. It’s remembered for its visuals but the core gameplay experience is really strong. I’m surprised that in over 10 years there haven’t been more shooters that followed its formula, not even the sequels.” Indeed: the second and third Crysis games were far different than the first one.
You read that correctly: the first Crysis was an inspiration behind Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Cooper can be called a veteran, as he worked at Crysis before his tenure at Naughty Dog. It probably underlines why Crytek is planning a Crysis re-release this summer on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch (possibly with Saber Interactive’s involvement…) and PC.
Crysis 3 was released about seven years ago, and by this point, the franchise was getting somewhat stale, which could explain why Crytek was starting to distance itself from the series. Naughty Dog has also taken a step away from Uncharted after finishing up Nathan Drake’s story with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s end, although we could get earlier stories on the PlayStation 5, and the chances of that happening is quite high…
A successful PlayStation 4-exclusive got inspired by a 2007 game by Crytek. That’s something we’d have never guessed.
