We heard more details about Sony‘s next-gen console.
VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb tweeted several times about the PlayStation 5 the other day. Let’s quote him: „[There are] lots of fawning over the work Mark Cerny did. I think part of this is that the PlayStation 5 devkits got out earlier, and Cerny did a lot of work highlighting the efforts. But still, devs seem gaga for it. The issue with saying that is without putting a name to it people will say so Sony devs said it. The fact we have yet to hear properly from one dev who has both seems weird especially 4 months from launch. It’s from some people who have been third-party for 25 years. They are saying, all things being equal, this is „the best-architected console” they’ve ever seen. Does that make sense? Like, beyond the normal advancements you would expect.” And he has a point: we don’t see such praise on Microsoft’s side, and if we do, it’s not that often.
Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told Gamesindustry that developing games for the PlayStation 5 (and possibly the Xbox Series X, too) will cost slightly more: „I think, to the extent that the technology enables the graphics side of it to become more interesting and life-like, [the games] will become slightly more human-intensive and capital intensive to produce. So yes, we think there probably will be an increase in development budgets. We don’t see it as being a massive increase, and that’s why we want to do more faster than we have ever done before, to provide a fertile install base for people who make games to be able to monetise against. If we can keep pace with a likely increase in development costs, then the industry can continue to prosper.” Bold words before a global recession are about to happen.
A popular Russian website, GameMag reported about the PlayStation 5’s potential design, and ResetEra also discussed it. This site claims that the PlayStation 5 final design doesn’t look like anything that has been leaked before. The console is said to have one unique detail, nobody talked about it because Sony most likely can track down the leaker if it does end up getting leaked. Design-wise, the PlayStation 5 doesn’t look like Xbox Series X or a smart speaker. It’s a traditional console: a flat, square, symmetrical box with rounded edges. However, the console is said to be huge: almost twice as big as the PlayStation 4 Pro! The company didn’t unveil all the secrets of the next-gen console yet, and they are said to announce one software feature soon, which was „was briefly talked about in Western press but nobody paid enough attention.”
So we should prepare for a big console.
