The addition seems logical due to being extra content, but it’s still surprising to see a PS1 emulator hidden in a somewhat recent game.

Other Ocean Emeryville released MediEvil, the PlayStation 4-exclusive remake of a 1998 PS1 game. As an extra (or an Easter egg), there is a possibility to play the original as well so the fans can experience the old adventures of Sir Daniel Fortesque. (However, you need to complete all 19 soul challenges to access this bonus.)

Lance McDonald, who has been in the news as well (due to his findings in P.T.), but the game modder has now showcased on Twitter what he found: in last year’s PlayStation 4 game, he found an emulator, but unfortunately, it can only run MediEvil properly.

As McDonald says, Silent Hill running in nearly 4K resolution on a PlayStation 4 Pro is not the best. Indeed it isn’t: Harry Mason, the protagonist of the game has the hitbox visible around him… but McDonald tried other games as well to see if it was only an issue with Silent Hill. „Syphon Filter doesn’t even get past the 989 Studios logo. Wild Arms gets to the main menu but no further. Seems like a bust to me. I had to patch some breakpoints out of the emulator to even get Silent Hill as far as you saw above. I’m not really gonna look any closer at it,” he wrote. Syphon Filter was made by Eidetic (which developed Bubsy 3D before it), which is now known as Sony Interactive Entertainment Bend Studio, known for Days Gone. 989 Studios was SIE’s predecessor, Sony Computer Entertainment’s American subsidiary.

The software emulation is a thing we should think about, though. The PlayStation 3 had this solution (the PlayStation 4 doesn’t due to not supporting CDs!) where you could simply plonk a PS1 disc and play. The PlayStation 5 should bring this back, as it will be on an x86 architecture (the PCs are also on x86-64), so it’d be easy to make PS1 or PS2 games supported natively, and not via a cloud, which is Sony likely planning for its PlayStation Now.

But how did the devs make an emulator where only one game is supported?
