Ashraf Ismail was fired from the French company – him stepping back wasn’t enough: Yves Guillemot has booted the former director of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla out of Ubisoft!

We previously wrote about how Ashraf Ismail, one of the key people behind Ubisoft, has stepped back from working on the new Assassin’s Creed as the director to restore his personal life to good standing (as he lied to a fan about his marital status for a whole year…). So far it seemed that he might return to work at Ubisoft later, but we can forget about it. „As a result of investigations, Ashraf Ismail has been dismissed from Ubisoft and is no longer an employee,” Ubisoft said.

The investigations are done by a third-party, external company, and Ismail’s dismissal could change the future of the Assassin’s Creed IP, as he had a significant influence over most of the recent episodes, being the director of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed: Origins.

The investigations are ongoing, though – Gamasutra reports that more people have the investigations found as suspects for causing sexual harassment: Jonathan Dumont (Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’s creative director, accused of bullying behaviour, sexism and homophobia, Hugo Girard (Gods & Monsters’ quest director, bullying and sexism), and Marc-Alexis Cote (Ubisoft Quebec’s executive producer, said to have turned a blind eye to rampant politics, bullying, and nepotism at the studio). Gamasutra also points out Ubisoft Singapore, the team behind Skull & Bones that we haven’t seen for years, as „a hotbed of sexism, racism, bullying, and abuse.” The French company doesn’t comment on the report.

The list of people who departed the company slowly but steadily increases, and we have still yet to see the end of the tunnel. If Ubisoft wants to remove the problems at the root, it will need time, and until then, we might see even more people forced out of the French publisher.
