The games keep getting bigger, but the storage in the next-gen consoles won’t follow this growth.
Earlier today, we mentioned how the PlayStation 5 will have less free storage space for us than the Xbox Series X. Also, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a prime example of a game being extremely big: the campaign, the multiplayer, and Warzone is confirmed to not fit on a 250 GB SSD anymore. It’s also an issue on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but at least on consoles, you have the option to uninstall some components.
Microsoft might have learned from this issue. „Even beyond the hardware, we’ve made user interface improvements to make it easier for you to manage your storage. As an example, one of the new features we’re adding is actually for, if a title chooses to support it, the ability to selectively uninstall different components of the game.
Let’s say you play a campaign as an example, and then you want to focus exclusively on multiplayer. If the developers chose to support it, you can uninstall the campaign itself, so that you can be more in control of how you’re using your storage, so you get the most benefit out of the available storage that you have,” Jason Ronald, Xbox’ development director, told Jason Hryb (Major Nelson) on his newest podcast. Xbox Game Studios titles (aka the first-party games) might be using this deal, presumable due to request from Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox.
The Xbox Series X (500 EUR/USD) and the Xbox Series S (300 EUR/USD) will launch worldwide on November 10. The latter is rumoured to have just a 512 GB SSD, which would be quite a small storage, especially in modern gaming. (The Xbox Series X will have 802 GB of space for you to use.)
