Phil Spencer: „Ray Tracing Support Is Spotty; We’re Years Away From 8K” [VIDEO]

The head of Xbox wasn’t messing around: he thinks that the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 are both tapping into unknown territories.

„When I think about games where ray tracing has had a dramatic impact on my experience as a player, it’s kind of spotty,” Phil Spencer told Wired in a new interview. Sure, on PC, the Nvidia GeForce RTX series started the expansion two years ago, but on consoles, the situation is far more dramatic. We only know of the following games to support the technology: „Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PlayStation 5), Gran Turismo 7 (PlayStation 5), Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (PlayStation 5), Quantum Error (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X), Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X), Bright Memory Infinite (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X), Observer: System Redux (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X), Chorus (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 (Xbox Series X), Call of the Sea (Xbox Series X), The Medium (Xbox Series X), The Ascent (Xbox Series X).”

Spencer also talked about 8K: „I think 8K is aspirational technology. The display capabilities of devices are not there yet. I think we’re years away from 8K being—if it ever is—standard in video games.” The two new consoles might not even reach it, and if they do, the frame rate might be questionable.

VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb shared a video, in which he shares his experiences about the Xbox Series X’ auto-HDR feature: „I’ve tested auto-HDR in several backward compatible games on a preview version of the Xbox Series X hardware. And it’s a big benefit. Every game I tested maxes out at 1,000 Nits, which is a measure of luminance. When it comes to HDR, 1,000 Nits is a gold standard for the bright highlights in an image.” So there will be improvements in how the games look.

The Xbox Series X (500 USD/EUR) and the Xbox Series S (300 USD/EUR) will both launch worldwide on November 10.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
