With the multiplatform, third-party developments, Microsoft has vowed to work together with the developers to overcome the performance differences.
Microsoft promoted the Xbox Series X as the strongest console on the market. It is capable of 12 TFLOPS of computing performance, which means that on paper, it should be stronger than its competitor, the PlayStation 5. However, the external developers’ titles, such as Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, DIRT 5, and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Sony shows better performance.
The Verge claims that the PlayStation 5 has pulled this off because Sony has sent out the PS5’s devkits earlier than Microsoft, giving them an advantage. The Redmond-based company only started to certify its Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S games in June, possibly because Microsoft waiting for AMD to provide them with the full RDNA 2 toolkit so that the new Xbox models could fully use it (we wrote about this before).
Microsoft’s response follows: „We are aware of performance issues in a handful of optimized titles on Xbox Series X/S and are working with our partners to identify and resolve the issues to ensure an optimal experience. As we begin a new console generation, our partners are just now scratching the surface of what next-gen consoles can do and minor bug fixes are expected as they learn how to take full advantage of our new platform. We are eager to continue working with developers to further explore the capability of Xbox Series X/S in the future.”
So Microsoft’s patient approach turned out to be a downside at the launch: Sony beat them to the punch with the devkits, giving developers plenty of time to get used to the new hardware, while Microsoft waited for more technical advantages, giving its launch a bit of an issue. Let’s get back to this subject a bit later.
