The new, weaker Xbox machine is perfectly capable as an emulation machine.
Modern Vintage Gamer, who does outstanding videos in many subjects, now used the weaker, albeit cheaper Xbox Series model in an unusual mode. The console has a Developer Mode, which allowed him to run PlayStation 2 games on it. (A few examples: Jak and Daxter, Silent Hill 2, Okami, God Hand, and Klonoa 2…) „The emulation scene is moving fast. In this episode we test PS2 games running on the Xbox Series S under Developer Mode,” he said.
The Xbox Series S, as well as the Xbox Series X, has a developer mode, which allows us to use emulation on Microsoft’s products. And even the Nintendo GameCube or the Nintendo Wii titles seem to have a proper performance on the smaller Xbox, utilizing the popular emulation solution that is available on essentially any platform by now, RetroArch.
With it, we have an unusual situation where the Xbox Series S has better performance running PlayStation 2 games than the PlayStation 5. We can’t put a PS2 disc into a PS5 (and we can’t put a disc into the Xbox Series S either, as it, along with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, has no Ultra HD Blu-ray drive), meaning Sony‘s new console only allows you to play the PS2>PS4 games on them, and the number of these titles are far smaller than the complete line-up of the most successful console.
So the Xbox Series S is an incredible emulation machine, allowing you to play games from 3, 4, 5 generations before without much hassle, even if Microsoft did not make the console for this purpose. They might have intentionally left this mode in the console, though. The video shows the performance nicely.
The old games shouldn’t be ignored. No wonder why Ratchet & Clank got a PlayStation 4 remake.
