Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive Entertainment have pulled this update out of nowhere: while we were somewhat expecting this to happen, it popped up quite suddenly.
The devs and the publisher announced on the PlayStation Blog that if we run The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation 5, we might experience better performance now. All you have to do is grab the 1.08 patch from the PlayStation Store for the story that launched last summer. If you do so and run the game on PS5, you will find a toggle in the Display options that allows you to choose between 30 frames per second and 60 frames per second targets. Other updates include enhanced resolution or faster load times (the latter is something that should be expected by this point).
„The team has been digging into the PlayStation 5 hardware and the possibilities it unlocks since launch last year and we’re excited about what the future holds. This patch is just the first step of working on the PlayStation 5. We’ll let you know when we’ve got more news to share!”, teased Naughty Dog director of communications Arne Meyer.
That comment is an obvious tease of what Naughty Dog wants to do, and we expected this ever since The Last of Us Part II launched last year on PlayStation 4. History will likely repeat itself, and the PlayStation 5 will receive a remastered version of the game, potentially including the rumoured Factions multiplayer mode in the package. (And remember: the first game also launched near the end of a console generation.)
Not much else needs to be said. The first video below is the patch trailer (yes, they did one), while the second one is an analysis provided by Digital Foundry.
