Adam Isgreen, creative director of the Age of Empires franchise, has shared some insights into the title’s development. The game is coming soon to PC and possibly Xbox.
Video games can be educational, and the Age of Empires franchise is a great example. The fourth instalment of the famous PC RTS is very close to release; Relic Entertainment’s Game Director Adam Isgreen told us about the educational focus of the highly anticipated Age of Empires 4.
Games such as Assassin’s Creed have taken the idea of Age of Empires and are trying to educate players on history while they enjoy the story and gameplay of the title. “I was very happy to hear that Assassin’s Creed added everything that they did in Origins,” Isgreen said when we mentioned this example to him. “We incorporated that style into the campaign for Age of Empires 4.
Isgreen says the plan was to make Age of Empires 4 as educational as the first few games in the series. “The approach to the campaign, the way the script was put together, and the elements in the story were all about ‘teaching you’.
Isgreen noted that even though the game doesn’t have the open world of Assassin’s Creed, where you can walk around and read about past events, he believes the approach he and the rest of the team took is just as valid. “We want to be passionate teachers of history, both for children and adults,” the director admits.
Age of Empires 4 will be released exclusively for PC on 28 October. However, the development team hasn’t ruled out a console version, but Isgreen says they’re mulling the idea until the title’s release (which is only odd because the game is being promoted by Xbox itself – ed).
