CD Projekt RED (from now on, just abbreviated as CDPR) has outlined what to expect around Cyberpunk 2077 while also providing new sales figures.
Let’s start at the beginning: the fiscal year 2021, which ended at the end of March this year, was recently reviewed by CDPR, where the company’s CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said, “One of our priorities has been to improve Cyberpunk 2077 further. The eight updates published over the past year significantly enhanced gameplay performance. Another milestone was the release – in February 2022 – of the game’s next-gen (PlayStation 5/Xbox Series) console version, along with a significant update for last-gen (PlayStation 4/Xbox One) consoles and PCs. We are satisfied with the reception with which gamers have met our work.
I can also share that we have sold 18 million copies of the game in less than a year and a half. For everyone who has already walked the streets of Night City – we’re working on further DLCs and a significant expansion featuring a new storyline. I’ve already touched upon internal changes. They were triggered by the release of Cyberpunk 2077, which taught us a great deal. We responded by updating our Group’s strategy.”
We’ve learned that The Witcher franchise has sold over 65 million games to date, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt accounts for over 40 million of those! The next-generation version of this has been delayed to an undisclosed date (as CDPR has taken development back from Saber Interactive, responsible for the otherwise excellent Nintendo Switch port) from the April-June quarter. So Geralt will get his facelift in-house…
CDPR on Cyberpunk 2077‘s Twitter summarized what the 2022 plan looks like in outline: they are developing the CP2077 expansion while continuing the game’s support; they are developing a new The Witcher with Unreal Engine 5, while also handling the next-gen edition of the third instalment; development is underway on a game based on one of the CDP franchises at The Molasses Flood, which was acquired by the Poles; they will launch a spinoff of Gwent, while the base game and The Witcher: Monster Slayer will see its support continued; concept and research work will continue on unannounced projects.
So they’re busy…
