The acquisition process, announced on January 31, has been completed, and Bungie, which developed Destiny after the first Halo games, has joined PlayStation Studios.
Sony has announced on Twitter that the acquisition will see Bungie join the Sony Interactive Entertainment umbrella as an independent subsidiary, remaining a multiplatform studio and publisher (we’ll see about that…) run by its current management team.. Bungie has responded by writing, „We are proud to join the incredible team at PlayStation officially, we are excited for the future of our company, and we are inspired to bring together players from all over the world to form lasting friendships and memories.”
Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios, added, „I have always admired Bungie’s ambitious, ground-breaking games and their focus on creativity, craft, and community. I can’t wait to spend more time with [Bungie CEO Pete Parsons], Jason Jones, and their team as we chart a bold course for [Sony Interactive Entertainment], PlayStation Studios, and Bungie together.” And Parsons wrote, „This unprecedented partnership with PlayStation is a big, bold step forward. I could not be more excited for the next phase of our adventure. Our vision is to make Bungie the best place anyone in the entertainment industry will ever work—a centre of creative and technical excellence for our team, our players, and the communities we call home.”
Staying with PlayStation, Sucker Punch Productions announced that as of July 3, 9.73 million copies of Ghost of Tsushima have been sold. The last time we heard that they had reached eight million was six months ago on January 4, adding 1.73 million to the total in six months for the game, which was released on PlayStation 4 on July 17, 2020 (two years ago!) and on PlayStation 5 (including the PS4 extended edition) last August.
Some stats: 78 million photos taken, 75.18 million foxes petted, 91.4 million missions played in Legends mode, 998.5 million standoffs, 540.78 million duels, 94.76 million onsen visited and 6437.4 years on horseback. A movie of the franchise is currently in the works (plus an unannounced sequel that can be treated as an open trade secret or so).
