MOVIE NEWS – The Watcher’s Identity Was Never Revealed.
Netflix is known for its creepy true crime dramas. This is certainly the case with his latest series, The Watcher also starring Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts as the new owners of a suburban New Jersey dream house that quickly turns into hell. The series is based on the shocking, real-life story of Derek and Maria Broaddus and their three children, who bought 657 Boulevard in Westfield, N.J., eight years ago for $1.3 million, according to CBS New York.
The Watcher is about Dean (Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Watts), fictional versions of Derek and Maria Broaddus. After pouring all of their savings into buying their dream home in the idyllic suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, they soon discover that the neighborhood isn’t very friendly. The family’s icy reception soon turns into total living hell when ominous letters begin to arrive from a person calling himself “The Watcher”, terrorizing the family to the core. Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s latest work, The Watcher, is all the more creepy because real events inspired it.
In the true version of the story, three days after the family arrived at 657 Boulevard, they received the first letter in their mailbox, which read:
Our dear new neighbor at Boulevard 657,
Allow me to welcome you to the neighborhood. 657 Boulevard has been in my family for decades, and as it nears its 110th birthday, I have been entrusted with watching and waiting for its second coming. My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched the house in the 1960s. My time has now come. Do you know the history of the house? Do you know what lies within the walls of 657 Boulevard? Why is he here? I’ll find out.
Should you fill the house with the young blood I asked for? It’s better for me. Was your old house too small for your growing family? Or did you just bring me your children out of greed? As soon as I know their names, I will call them and draw them to me.
The writer also claimed that he once “ran from room to room imagining life with the wealthy residents there. And now I watch and wait for the day when they [sic] my young blood will be mine again”.
Signature: “the Watcher”.
What happened after the watcher’s letter?
After Derek and Maria Broaddus received the first letter, the couple received two more letters from Watcher A, with the third questioning why the family had not yet moved in. “Where have you been?” Written by the watcher. “I miss you on Route 657.”
The Watcher House went viral in 2015 when the family sued the previous homeowners, John and Andrea Woods, for failing to disclose that the house included a Watcher. As claimed in the lawsuit, the previous homeowners also received a letter from Figyelő a week before the house sale became official. The legal battle lasted several years, during which time the Broaddus family tried to sell the home or tear it down and build two new buildings.
In 2017, when the home was finally rented out, another observation letter was received. The letter was more ominous this time, but the tenant agreed to stay.
Although the watcher’s case is no longer active, it is still open. The watcher was never identified.
