The Spotify app is officially getting a native PS5 app via an update to the existing PS4 version, available to download now.
The current music app has received official support for PS5, updating it to a native app. Previously, the official app was released for PS4 and was therefore compatible with PS5. The app allowed gamers to play their own music in the background while enjoying the game through their linked Spotify account, and could be controlled with a few button presses.
Even though the Spotify app on PS4 worked relatively easily on PS5, the native version is no surprise. PlayStationGameSize’s Twitter account has been announcing the possible arrival of a native Spotify app for PS5 for some time. This coincided with previous consoles getting their own native version of the app.
The native Spotify app for PS5 is now available via a 40MB update. According to some Reddit users, the update hasn’t brought any drastic changes to the user interface or anything else. One user reported a better response to input when using the app, but could not clearly prove whether this was due to the update. Currently, the PS5 Spotify app continues the trend of PS4 software being easily upgraded to the PS5 version.
As one of the biggest music platforms currently available, it makes sense that Spotify would work flawlessly on modern hardware. While the app lacks features unique to the PS5, something may be added in the future. One Reddit user suggested that the app’s haptic feedback support would allow users to feel the beat in their controller. Such a feature could be great for gamers using the PS5 as a multimedia machine.
The PS5 has been fortunate to have a huge library of games and apps over the life of the PS4. While other big-name titles are getting some PS5 updates, it would be nice to see apps like Spotify updated too. Gamers can only hope that PS5 will get more apps that have some sort of native support. With the recent update to Spotify, it’s only a matter of time before the other apps that people use every day get the same treatment.
