We also looked at the graphics options for Sony’s Santa Monica game.
Let’s start with ElAnalistaDeBits’ comparison video. In short, the PlayStation 4 Pro falls short of the mark, while the base PlayStation 4 (or Slim) and the PlayStation 5 are solid performers. Favor Quality and Favor Performance modes are available on the PlayStation 5, but their performance varies depending on whether you have a 120Hz display that supports VRR (variable refresh rate). At 60 Hz, Favor Quality gives 4K/30 FPS, while Favor Performance gives 60 FPS at dynamic 4K (minimum 1440p). At 120 Hz, Favor Quality at dynamic 4K (minimum 1800p) gives 40 FPS, but with VRR, the frame rate becomes unlimited, and Favor Performance, the unlimited frame rate ranges from 80-90 FPS at 1440p. Performance is good.
On the base PlayStation 4, 1080p and 30 FPS is the only option, but the 2013 console keeps it appropriately. On the PlayStation 4 Pro, Favor Quality ranges from 1440p to 1656p at 30 FPS, while Favor Performance fluctuates between 1080p and 1656p at around 50 FPS but drops down into the 40s in some places. The latter is the only one that falls short of the target: it’s supposed to run at 60 FPS! The picture quality on the PlayStation 4 is reasonable. The draw distance and environment complexity are similar to what the PlayStation 5 offers, but some textures, reflections and shadows are worse, and load times are longer (PlayStation 5: ~10 seconds, PlayStation 4: minimum 30).
