Germany’s Daedalic Entertainment has decided to halt in-house game development, as The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was terrible despite several delays (it might already be one of the three worst games of the year!). In a statement sent to gameswirtschaft.de, the publisher called the suspension of their internal developments a difficult turning point, but also offered some optimism, as they said the move was “a new beginning in the long history of Daedalic Entertainment.” But stopping development is not so simple.
At least 25 people are involved, so they will either have to move elsewhere in the German company’s network or face the prospect of being fired. “We value every team member, and it is important that the transition goes as smoothly as possible. Therefore, we will support our former employees in finding new opportunities within our network,” Daedalic wrote. The company may have also caused some headaches for the co-publisher (and Daedalic owner…) French Nacon, as The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, is a raspberry award winner on Metacritic and OpenCritic, as it is the lowest average-rated (?) game of 2023. After all, the apology.jpg, the pathetic tactic followed by many companies (releasing a game in a horrible condition, apology picture on Twitter…), is ridiculous. After that, you can say that it is untrue because, at that time, they promised more updates and improvements for the game…
We recently wrote about another Lord of the Rings game that Daedalic had backed and was likely to be released by the end of August 2024, having been in development since 2022. This project must also be abandoned as it was also an internal development. But the new Deponia game, Surviving Deponia, does not need to be, as an external company, AtomicTorch Studio, is developing it.
After all, it’s probably better if Daedalic sticks to publishing, or maybe the point-and-click genre, because that’s what the German company used to excel at…
