TECH NEWS – Rumors suggest that Meta is looking to conquer the lower end of the market and compete with Apple in the high end.
So, high-end mixed reality (MR) is Meta’s goal. Mark Zuckerberg’s company wants to work with LG to make the headset, which it wants to be cheaper than Apple’s Vision Pro ($ 3,500), and wants to release the device in 2025. Meta’s headsets, intended to be premium, are planned to be branded Pro, so one might suspect that the LG-made machine will be called Meta Quest Pro 4.
According to a South Korean site, Maekyung, the connection between Meta and LG was born after the unveiling of the Apple Vision Pro, and we recently wrote that Samsung, another Korean company, dropped a prototype of its headset after it was outdated in both looks and technology. Until the Quest 4 Pro hits the stores, Meta won’t be idle and will be looking to gain a foothold in the more price-sensitive category.
According to Maekyung, Meta will release a low-cost device (Meta Quest 3 Lite) in 2024 that will be cheaper than $200 and will be followed by the Quest 4 Pro in 2025, but its pricing is unknown (roughly $2,000?). NH Investment & Securities said of the saturated market: “Samsung Electronics is likely to position its product between Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta Quest. The hardware is expected to be premium like Apple’s, but the price will be lower than Apple’s to make it more accessible to the general public. There is a possibility that it will be lowered.”
LG already filed a patent for an MR headset in 2019, so it could have been developing this for the last few years. Will the company eventually use it in the Meta Quest 4 Pro?
