According to a job posting, the game will feature much bigger machine monsters than we saw in Horizon: Zero Dawn or its sequel, Horizon: Forbidden West.
Released in February 2017, Horizon: Zero Dawn showed that there was life for Guerrilla Games beyond Killzone (that franchise was also seemingly killed off by Sony). It was post-apocalyptic and stylish. It’s no wonder a sequel was made (while the first instalment was also released on PC), and then came with a PlayStation 5 exclusive DLC, so anyone who played Horizon: Forbidden West on PS4 missed out on Burning Shores. And for PlayStation VR2, Horizon: Call of the Mountain was released, adding a first-person adventure to the rapidly growing franchise.
Will Aloy’s story get a third instalment? At the moment, the answer seems to be no. There are rumours that an online multiplayer spin-off is in the works for late 2022, where you can fight each other as well as hunt down machines. To all this we can add the many tribes of the franchise. This project is clearly Sony’s plan for a seemingly overstretched expansion of the live service model. Guerrilla’s Amsterdam studio is working on the project.
Here’s the job description for a Senior Combat Designer: “Work closely with the Lead Combat Designer to design multiple machine enemies that provide a variety of challenges against multiple players. Design, modify and update the behaviour of existing iconic machines from the Horizon franchise, as well as designing the introduction of new machines. Work closely in a multi-disciplinary team to develop each machine from concept to release. Use metrics, player feedback and a variety of different analytics to improve and refine each machine over time.
The game could be announced by Sony at this year’s The Game Awards. Maybe not. But something is in the works.
