Alan Wake 2’s Most-Talked Scene Almost Got Cut!

Remedy Entertainment has been brave enough to include something in the story that at first glance doesn’t really fit into the game, but the Finnish studio has done a great job of making it feel like it belongs there…

First of all, for those who haven’t played Alan Wake 2, there are spoilers. For those who have started and are not yet on the fourth mission, read on from the next paragraph at your own risk. As this is a major, recently released and, on the face of it, fairly successful game, it’s understandable that we should give you this warning before we get into it.

Sam Lake, Creative Director of Remedy Entertainment, was a guest on the Friends Per Second podcast. The Finnish genius (who recently admitted that he has a dark, gothic fantasy idea he’d like to work on before he retires from the industry) revealed that Alan Wake 2’s fourth mission, We Sing, was almost entirely cut by the team, which would have been a shame!

“It was really, really hard to have a musical in it for a number of reasons. And there were a lot of production meetings [where people said] ‘Come on, we have to cut this’. I was like, ‘No way, we are not cutting it. I knew Matthew Poretta is a great singer, so Alan Wake can sing in this. And then I found David Harewood, who is wonderful, he has a background in singing,” said Lake, who also praised Matthew Poretta’s vocal abilities for helping him create the vision he wanted. “When you say to someone, ‘We’re going to put a musical in a survival horror game,’ the question is, ‘Well, how? What’s the gameplay loop there?” added game director Kyle Rowley.

Alan Wake 2 will soon feature a New Game+ mode that lets you keep your weapons and upgrades. A new difficulty level (Nightmare) is coming, but there will also be a new alternate story, new manuscript pages and video content.
