iPhone 16 Pro: Apple Tests Several Prototypes With Different Buttons

TECH NEWS – The Cupertino-based company has not yet decided which buttons to expect on the new cell phones coming this fall.

The iPhone 15 lineup has more variations than the 14. The base model and Plus have Dynamic Island, more advanced cameras and a slightly better design when you look at the back. However, the Pro and Pro Max versions also have a new button, Action, which can be customized to perform multiple functions… and rumor has it that Apple is planning to redesign it for the iPhone 16 Pro as well.

According to MacRumors, Apple is developing a prototype with a redesigned Action button. The volume control has also been modified by the company, but we don’t really know what the final result will look like because there are also plans to merge the two volume controls. Four combinations are rumored (1: a smaller action button with unified volume buttons; 2: a large action button with a new capture button and unified volume buttons; 3: a large action button with a capture button and separate volume buttons; 4: a small action button with a recessed capture button and separate volume buttons).

Apple is currently testing a fourth variant that would keep everything as it is on the iPhone 15, but the recessed Capture button would fit completely into the bezel of the iPhone 16 Pro. Looking at the other concepts, it has to be said that the tests could be part of Project Bongo, which aimed to bring haptic buttons to the iPhone. The iPhone 15 Pro was supposed to have them, but Apple wasn’t satisfied with the quality and scrapped the plan. The iPhone 16 Pro could also get them, and on that design, the haptic buttons were combined. On another prototype, the large Action button was too close to the volume control pair. The Proto2 design will keep the Action button, but it will be the same size as the iPhone 15 Pro, but a Capture button with camera-centric functionality could also appear.
