The Dead Space Remake was a success, but the studio may be on the wrong track…
The 2008 game has been fairly transplanted to the 2023 standard, giving Isaac Clarke’s story a more dynamic, advanced set of game mechanics. Only after its success is it fair to ask: is a remake of Dead Space 2 on the way? While this may be good for fans, the ground will eventually run out from under Motive, the game’s developer. The game came out earlier this year, so it was quickly forgotten by some (for example, the genre-similar Resident Evil 4 Remake took the limelight), and 2023 saw more excellent work. For example, there was Baldur’s Gate 3…
But let’s not forget that Dead Space 3 was a huge failure, as Electronic Arts turned it into a Call of Duty game and then closed the development team (Visceral Games) a few years later. The remake could follow a similar path, but Dead Space 2 is a different case. It corrected the flaws of the first part in several elements and was arguably nicer, bigger and more than what Dead Space offered. But the third installment was more action-oriented and featured a local co-op story mode, which proved to be such a misstep that the franchise was not continued.
The success of Dead Space Remake was that it offered similar gameplay to Dead Space 2, so if this game gets remade it will be hard to distinguish it from the original, and if the third part is remade, the momentum for a fourth part wouldn’t be there again. For this reason, Motive could be in serious trouble, as fans of the franchise would love to see Dead Space 4, but given Electronic Arts’ track record, we can expect a lazier approach, so the only thing the publisher can do is push remakes.
And that’s something the studio will find difficult, if not impossible, to get out of. If a new Dead Space were already in development, the end result could still be very positive.
