Dragon’s Dogma 2 could be the first swallow for the Japanese publisher, and they will also charge $70 for each AAA title.
In a Q&A during Capcom’s financial report, Capcom said it would consider a software pricing strategy after the release of the long-awaited Dragon’s Dogma sequel. Of course, the Japanese publisher has had other successful IPs of late, with Resident Evil and Monster Hunter proving particularly popular with gamers, but Street Fighter is also worth mentioning, with the release of Street Fighter 6 last year.
According to Capcom, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be released in the current fiscal year (so it will be available to the public before the end of March) for $70. Development costs are rising in the games industry, so one option is to review the price, but the Japanese company wants to take a more cautious approach while also taking user feedback into account, so if Capcom gets too much criticism for the $70 price tag, they wouldn’t push too hard.
But given the comments from Capcom’s president, it wouldn’t be a big surprise if all of their new AAA games from April onwards are at least $70. In fact, during the Tokyo Game Show, Haruhiro Tsujimoto said something along these lines: “Personally, I think that game prices are too low. Development costs are about 100 times higher than they were in the days of the Famicom (NES), but the price of software hasn’t increased that much. Wages also need to be raised to attract talented people. With wages rising across the industry, I think the ability to raise unit prices is a healthy way of doing business.
In December, Ubisoft also began releasing games for $70 (Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was the first). The first such publisher was the money-hungry Take-Two in August 2020 (NBA 2K21), followed by Activision, Sony, Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Nintendo and Microsoft.
