TECH NEWS – AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su discussed this topic at the SXSW conference, and since the company’s Instinct chips are involved in the expansion of artificial intelligence (many would switch from Nvidia’s technology), the question is a valid one.

Su says they need to accelerate and experiment, but they need to do so with a wary eye. Artificial intelligence is evolving, there’s no denying that, but it’s still in a conceptual stage, surrounded by a lot of excitement and investment right now, and it remains to be seen what form it will take in the future. It needs a lot of processing power, and AMD can help with that with its Instinct AI cards and Epyc server processors, which are increasingly being installed in AI machines. This was Su’s response to a question about AMD’s responsibility in AI:

“We all have a responsibility as big companies in the AI ecosystem. If you think about the things about AI that we need to be careful about, it’s how you train models. It’s making sure that the data that you’re using is not biased in any way. Right now, there’s all this conversation about are the models giving you the right answer? I think what we want to do is we want to make sure that the models are giving you the best answer that they can, and so we have a responsibility in how we implement the data that’s coming in and some of the models that are out there and how we use the data; making sure that we’re very protective of people’s privacy and intellectual property. So those are absolutely things that we take very seriously.

What I will say, though, is that the answer to those who are a little bit concerned about what AI is going to do: the answer is not to slow down, that’s definitely not the answer. The answer is to be very aware of the risks – so we are thinking about that, but this technology is so powerful, so transformative, that we need to go faster, we need to experiment, but we need to do it with a watchful eye,” Su said.

If they do it all within the proper legal framework, it will not turn into Skynet.
