TECH NEWS – The technology from the self-driving car project, Project Titan, has been transferred to another device, but it too poses many challenges for the Cupertino company.
Apple engineers are working on a mobile robot that can follow people around their homes and perform multiple tasks. According to Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman, Apple is planning more personal robot concepts because the company sees great potential in them. The project is still in the very early stages, but the company is already using artificial intelligence algorithms to help the robot get around despite limited space. The “applebot” can do the dishes and other chores, but the concept may not be easy to turn into reality.
According to Gurman, Apple’s robot won’t even become a reality this decade because engineers have a lot of challenges to overcome, and the project could be scrapped because Apple could shut it down if it doesn’t see money in it. The hardware could compete with Amazon’s Astro, although it’s more of a virtual assistant focused on home security.
Another area of robotics is table-top hardware. One idea would be to connect it to a display and have it track your head movements during a FaceTime call, although Gurman’s sources say that’s not easy to do either, as it’s difficult to balance the weight of a robotic motor on a small stand. Some Apple executives have reportedly denounced the product’s development, but similar rumors were heard during the Apple Vision Pro, and the AR headset was released in February (at least in the US).
If either a walking robot or a table-top robot project does come to fruition, expect one of them to be released within the next five years, as this is another technology that requires sophisticated testing and hardware, and it is very rare to hear of Apple releasing something in a cobbled-together form. It’s better to doubt it, because Project Titan was a decade in the making, but they pulled the rug out from under it.
