Nacon has announced more details about Terminator: Survivors, which will be an open-world survival/adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic world after 2005’s Judgment Day…
The French publisher explained the game’s lore: “We have witnessed Sarah Connor’s efforts to avert Judgment Day, the Resistance’s battle against Skynet. And yet, while Judgment Day looms large in the Terminator mythos, the aftermath, the resilience of the survivors, and the genesis of John Connor’s Resistance have remained largely untold. Sarah Connor succeeded in preventing the Judgment Day event of 1997, but this did not stop Cyberdyne and the birth of Skynet, it merely postponed the inevitable. In September 2005, Skynet achieved self-awareness and launched a global nuclear attack, resulting in the destruction of billions of people.
Those who were far enough away from the epicenters, or who had taken refuge in anti-nuclear shelters, faced the dawn of a new era amid radiation and societal collapse. With long-range communication systems offline, people gathered in small, often feuding communities and struggled to secure scarce resources. In Terminator: Survivors, players traverse an environment scarred by years of radiation. It’s 2009, and various factions are fighting for control of territory and vital resources. Very few people are aware of the events that led to the bombs being dropped, and especially at the beginning of the game, very few people are aware of the existence of Skynet,” Nacon wrote. So it’s four years after Judgment Day, and John Connor has formed the Resistance…
Skynet has not yet reached its production capacity. The T-800 is here as a reminder of what Skynet’s time traveling machine is capable of. It will be the only T-800 in the game, constantly hunting and following us as Skynet tries to rewrite history and win the future war. Nacon is going for the atmosphere of the first two movies: the threat of an unstoppable machine on the horizon, and therefore a sense of fear and urgency. The T-800 will create tension and fear, and like the protagonists of the films, we will feel what it is like to have an unstoppable, unrelenting and un-negotiable machine in our wake.
Terminator: Survivors will use Unreal Engine 5 and will be fully playable offline, but will also allow up to four players to play cooperatively. There will be a beta, but it will be closer to the game’s release. It will launch in early access on Steam on October 24th, but there are also plans for PlayStation 5 and Xbox series ports, but for both consoles we don’t know if there will be an early access version.
