DOOM 4 was eventually chucked into the trash bin all the way back in 2012, and now id Software reflects on their past move, telling us about why they pulled this move off all those years ago.
According to the game’s executive producer, Marty Stratton, the original DOOM 4 entirely lacked personality. In this version, we’d have attacked the demons on Earth alongside a team of rebels. This honestly doesn’t sound like something that would grab someone’s attention. The concept itself was really Call of Duty-like, receiving the title of „Call of Doom”.
Despite that, Stratton thinks the game wasn’t that bad, but it lacked what the DOOM fans and id themselves wanted to see in the game. This is why the game was deleted, and this move was supported by Bethesda – the publishers – and Zenimax – the owners of the publishers – as well.
The rebooted, final Doom concept will materialize in an actual game next year on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC’s triumvirate.
