Battlefield: Is Electronic Arts Developing a ‘Battleverse’?

The future of Battlefield sounds ambitious, but it is questionable whether the publisher led by Andrew Wilson will be able to achieve such ambitious goals with a franchise that was once a major contender with Call of Duty, but is now struggling.

When Wilson took the helm at Electronic Arts, he said the publisher would become the world’s largest video game company, and earlier this year he dreamed of a world where 3 billion people were creating games for the publisher using Electronic Arts’ artificial intelligence technology. Wilson may be making a similar claim now, as he says the next Battlefield will be the most ambitious project in the publisher’s history.

He said as much in Electronic Arts’ quarterly report. Of course, it has been a good three months for the company as EA Sports College Football 25 and the other Live Service products have exceeded expectations. Now they’re excited to see how Madden, EA Sports FC and Dragon Age: The Veilguard will fare. Battlefield is also being hyped pretty heavily by the publisher, even though the franchise has been on a rather troubled path. Battlefield 2042 hasn’t really won over veteran fans (and currently has a middling mixed rating on Steam), and an entire studio was shut down by the publisher, even though that team was working on a single-player project…

“This is not only one of our top priorities, but also one of the most ambitious projects in our history. We have assembled the best team, coupled with the resources and technology they need to deliver an epic Battlefield experience,” Wilson said of the new Battlefield. Despite the studio’s closure, the CEO calls the group the largest team ever to work on the game, with the goal of building a Battlefield universe where single-player and multiplayer experiences are intertwined. So a Battleverse is being built…

The publisher is confident in Battlefield because of the team’s unique ability to listen, learn and be inspired by the audience, and because the franchise has attracted over 25 million players in the last 12 months. A bit overly optimistic.
