The Japanese market has seen the release of Sony‘s new PlayStation 4 model last week. The CUH-1200 series is the one that sheds 10 percentage off the console’s weight as well as having an 8 percentage lower power consumption. We had no idea about how Sony managed to achieve the latter feature, but after someone disassembled the new PS4, the mystery got solved quite quickly.
The first models had 16 memory chips on the motherboard, each having 512 megabytes for size, totaling up in the 8 gigabytes of memory for the console. The new model has only 8 chips, with 1 gigabyte for each. The manufacturer of them is still Samsung, and the chips aren’t positioned around the APU anymore, instead, they are now put on the back of the motherboard.
The other change on the console is the appearance of the mechanical buttons: the power and eject buttons aren’t touch sensible anymore. The LED light is also smaller. The CUH-1200 series will launch in July worldwide, with the same price tag. You can check out the disassemblement of the console on this Japanese website.
