Both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One has an eight-core CPU inside them. Both of these current generation consoles allow six cores for games by default while the seventh and eight one would be responsible for the operation systems and other background operations. Microsoft has already changed this, as a new update opened up the 7th core for the games, although it still has to run some system operations as well. Sony is very likely to follow suit if we can believe a middleware supplier. (And to be honest, why shouldn’t we trust them?)
FMOD and their documentations state that the Sony is going to upgrade soon: for the PlayStation 4-devs, the 7th core is going to be unlocked shortly, which would put the PS4 back to the top as the currently strongest console. (Don’t forget, Sony’s console has a stronger GPU by default!)
However, the Japanese company hasn’t announced this upgrade yet, so we can’t be 100% sure about this. Still, we’re going to quote one important line from FMOD’s documentations: LowLevel API – PS4 – Added FMOD_THREAD_CORE6 to allow access to the newly unlocked 7th core.
It doesn’t look fake at all. We can’t wait for the announcement. After all, if Microsoft did the same, why shouldn’t Sony do it too?
