Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has talked about Project Scorpio again.
On Twitter, he got the following question: „with the Xbox Scorpio, is the 4k mandatory or can devs go for 1080p 60fps with massively upgraded visuals and upscale to 4K?” Spencer responded with „We’ll talk more about this later but we never said we’d mandate 4K framebuffer, we won’t.”
With this decision, Microsoft can make all games run on all three Xboxes (basic model, S, and Project Scorpio). The green team can give freedom to developers because if there is no obligation to make games in 4K resolution, then we might see 1080p games with a stable framerate and eye-watering graphics.
However, the requirement of supporting older hardware for all games might be a limiting factor for the developers in the future. We can’t judge for ourselves yet until the Scorpio is out at the end of 2017.
@ThatDudeizEric We’ll talk more about this later but we never said we’d mandate 4K framebuffer, we won’t.
