Sonic feels comfortable in two dimensions.
That’s not a problem, mind you; the blue, speedy hedgehog debuted in a 2D game on the SEGA MegaDrive/Genesis in 1991. Since then, two and a half decades have passed, and he had quite a few awful games – the latest abomination was 2014’s Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric on the Wii U.
He might come back to the spotlight, though: Sonic Mania looks promising. The twelve-minute, non-commentary video shows that the 16-bit charm is present, which could be a way to pull in the veteran Sonic fans. We can take a look at two levels, namely Green Hill Zone and Studiopolis Zone. (The former’s classic melody is already playing in our head…)
Sonic Mania is expected to launch in Spring 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Old Sonic is not a bad Sonic.
