Grand Theft Auto V raised the bar quite high.
Take-Two published the game initially for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, followed by the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One port a year later, then it finally surfaced on PC in Spring 2015. Grand Theft Auto V has become the highest grossing media title of all time. That means it generated more money than movies like Star Wars! It generated nearly six BILLION dollars with its 90+ million sales, according to MarketWatch.
Doug Creutz, Cowen’s analyst, thinks that even the entire Mario Brothers series can’t show this result, making Grand Theft Auto V Take-Two’s Call of Duty. Creutz believes that Rockstar will be unlikely to repeat this success with Red Dead Redemption 2, which is set to launch in October on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. „Michael Jackson had a lot of hit albums, but he only had one ‘Thriller.’” he said. Let’s see the platforms’ distribution rate: PlayStation 3: 32,8%, PlayStation 4: 27,4%, Xbox 360: 25,5%, Xbox One: 12,2%, PC: 2,1%.
Even Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, said that they don’t expect as much success from Red Dead Redemption 2 as Grand Theft Auto V, but he hopes the sales will be good, though…
At least they don’t have to pay Leslie Benzies – formerly, he was the producer of several Rockstar games from Grand Theft Auto III to Max Payne 3, and he went to take a sabbatical from the presidential seat of Rockstar North before he left the company. Previously, he sued Take-Two for 150 million dollars of royalties, claiming that he was fired from the company. The case was dismissed, and Benzies will get nothing…
