The United Kingdom Sees More Slump In Retail Game Sales

Although Far Cry 5 pulled in March (as well as the previous week), the trend to shift towards digital distribution seems to continue.

1.37 million retail sales in March – this number sounds good on paper, but year-on-year, it’s an 18% decrease in the UK, and the revenue also dropped 24.7% to 44.4 million GBP. After the first two months of 2018, March was the first negative month, which is reasonable: a year ago, something called the Nintendo Switch hit the shelves. Also, the games last year: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect Andromeda…

The month’s bestseller was Far Cry 5. The other new entries on the chart: Sea of Thieves (4), Burnout Paradise Remastered (8), A Way Out (11), Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (15), Kirby Star Allies (19), and Assassin’s Creed Rogue Remastered (20). Until September, GamesIndustry doesn’t expect any positive months – that month, there will be several major games, such as Spider-Man, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, and FIFA 19.

On the weekly charts, the podium is exactly the same as a week before (Far Cry 5 – FIFA 18 – Sea of Thieves) – that’s rare…
