The Japanese company is „looking at possibilities”. Perhaps the Minecraft advertisement with Microsoft and Nintendo collaborating was the catalyst…
Cross-play, in short, isn’t something that Sony supports towards other consoles (only with PC). It might change soon, possibly because of the Fortnite-debacle (where PlayStation 4 users are forced to make a new account to play on the Nintendo Switch). Sony Interactive Entertainment America’s CEO, Shawn Layden commented on the situation to Eurogamer: „We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”
Again, we see this business supporting comment. We had seen this last week when John Smedley, the former president of Sony Online Entertainment (Daybreak), talked about the lack of cross-play. It seems that even today, money is the only reason behind Sony’s lack of support towards the competition.
Sony might start to feel the sting the lack of cross-play could cause, and since Nintendo and Microsoft both openly support the subject (after all, we don’t usually see an advertisement where both consoles are named!), they have to do something not to lose their market share…
