Shawn Layden talked about more than the PlayStation Experience in the newest PlayStation Blogcast.
Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios’ chairman talked about how Sony pulled a sudden U-turn towards cross-play with Fortnite earlier this week: „Cross-play is something that has been taking up about 65% of my Twitter feed over the last few months. Now, enabling cross-play isn’t as simple as flipping a switch and there you go. It’s a very multidimensional attribute or feature. It’s taken us longer than I would have wanted. Right now, we’re in a beta test program, and when you beta test something you try to reduce the number of variables in the equation, so right now, Fortnite is beta testing for cross-play. I think that, certainly, once we can prove that this is holding together sturdy and well, I would anticipate seeing other games in this service over time.”
Other games would openly support cross-play. (One of them is Psyonix’ Rocket League, which was developed with cross-platform gaming in mind.) WindowsCentral reports that Microsoft would appreciate if Sony allowed cross-play in Minecraft as well: „We believe in giving gamers the opportunity to play the games they want with the people they want. Whether that means working with our partners to deliver cross-network play with games like ‘Rocket League’ and ‘Fortnite’ or enabling cross-device play with the likes of Minecraft, we are supportive of new scenarios that will allow more people to play and have fun together while gaming. We would love to bring players on PlayStation 4 into our Minecraft ecosystem as well but have nothing further to share at this time.”
So, the cross-play situation is improving, which is fantastic.
