Fallout 76 – More Details [VIDEO]

PREVIEW – Some new information about Fallout 76.

There will be no way for two players to have their respective bases on the same location. The player who plonks his camp on the location first will get prioritised. The second player’s camp will be packed up, and due to the blueprint, they can put it anywhere else on the map. The servers are temporal, so unless we play with our friends, the base will always be placed elsewhere as the server would be a new instance.

If we attack someone, the other player would have to fight back to qualify their defeat as a legal kill. However, if they don’t strike back, we will be a wanted person for murder, and our location will be shown to everyone else on the map. On the other hand, we won’t see the other players there. Their bounty would be a portion of our cap collection, and since we can’t have zero caps, we’ll still lose them. In case we don’t have a lot of caps, the game will debuff us as penalty:

„You lose whatever caps you have, down to zero, and you take a debuff that reduces the amount of damage you do to everything. Both other players and PvE. So you are now far less dangerous to everything as a penalty. For two hours in the game, you’re going to be spitting spitballs at enemies to remind you that you’re a murderer. Remember, we speak about murder as you killing someone who didn’t want to fight and wasn’t interested in engaging, not you fired at me, I fired at you, we both wanted to do this. It’s specifically to stop people doing this where it’s negative and one-sided. It’s meant not to be fun – you will do far less damage with anything you use for a period,” Pete Hines, Bethesda‘s marketing vice president, said.

What about community servers and modding? „We love the modding community, and we’ve been supporting them for decades. We do plan to launch private worlds in the future where people can modify their servers as they see fit. We 100% want to support [community servers]. That has been my goal with this game since day one,” project lead Jeff Gardiner said. „By the way, we should be clear, [this won’t happen] all that close to launch. It isn’t happening a couple of months after launch; it’s going to take some amount of time to spin up your private servers to support whatever mods you want to run. It’s going to take a while,” Hines added. They will first concentrate on the game (which was previously mentioned).

Bethesda recommends playing the game solo from time to time to experience the story via NPC monologues, voice tapes, radio messages, and computer terminals. „You’ll play this game for 30 hours, 300 hours, or whatever. Sometimes you will play in a group, and sometimes you’ll play solo, and those are the times when you have the time to delve into the fiction, listen to the holotapes, and read all the monitors, and get into the story, but there is more of tension there.

You can’t pause the game. When you’re reading a terminal, something might sneak up behind you and eat you, and it often does, but the more we playtest it, the more we realise how viable it is. It supports the idea of how dangerous the world is,” Gardiner explained.

If we reach level five in Fallout 76, we’ll be able to play PvP. The game will try to balance us to give us a chance against higher level enemies instead of us dying from a single hit: „Gear plays a big part, but we do equalise the damage somewhat. Perks come into it as well. A higher level player will have many more perks to choose from,” production editor Chris Mayer explained. „It’s not like a high-level player shows up and whips everyone’s ass,” Hines added.

„You’re still bound by your inventory and weight limits. The fat man (mini-nuke launcher) is heavy, and the shells are very heavy. You’re not hoarding like in Fallout 4, so that’s also a factor. Remember this is a survival game. During playtesting, you know your character is going to go away in three hours, so you’re going to use all your stimpacks and shoot all your ammo. But when you’re playing for real, you make a lot of different decisions. I have one fat man shell – do I want to use it to kill this guy, or do I want to save it for the scorchbeast?”, Gardiner asks.

Fallout 76 will have Skyrim-like treasure maps where the classic red X will mark the treasure’s spot. (PCGamer compared them to Red Dead, although Skyrim had something similar…) At least the nuclear explosions will have a significant impact on the map – the first video shows a clip of it. The VATS has also been reduced/dumbed down: as this game is always online, you can’t slow down time. Instead, it will point out the enemies, and the percentage of a possible hit connecting on said body part. Then, the system will decide if we hit them or not – weirdly, your gun will not follow the location you point (and plan to aim) to, and it will be difficult to spot if you hit the enemies or not.

There’s also half an hour of gameplay that shows The Vault, as well as one of the six locations called The Forest. Fallout 76 will launch on November 14 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Grabbing controllers since the middle of the nineties. Mostly he has no idea what he does - and he loves Diablo III. (Not.)
