PREVIEW – Ghost of Yōtei is officially in the works at Sucker Punch. As the direct successor to Ghost of Tsushima, this upcoming title places players in the shoes of a brand-new protagonist while taking action in a different region of Japan. Unveiled as the grand finale of PlayStation’s September 2024 State of Play showcase, the first glimpse of this open-world experience was nothing short of spectacular—every bit as visually stunning as Jin Sakai’s original journey.
With the official announcement came confirmation that the game is targeting a 2025 release. While an exact launch date remains unknown, it’s only a matter of time before further details emerge. Ever since discussions of a Ghost of Tsushima film surfaced in 2021, speculation about a sequel has been rampant. Now that a new chapter is officially on its way, excitement is at an all-time high. Given that Ghost of Yōtei may entice newcomers to experience the original, the timing for this sequel couldn’t be better. Additionally, Sony has reaffirmed its commitment to releasing “major single-player games” annually moving forward.
As one of the most highly anticipated PS5 exclusives, Ghost of Yōtei is shaping up to be a standout entry in the platform’s lineup. Below, we’ve gathered all the available details on what to expect from the game.
When Will Ghost of Yōtei Be Released?
As of now, Ghost of Yōtei is slated for a 2025 launch, with Sucker Punch only confirming the year. Since the project is still in its early stages, it could take a while before an official release date is locked in.
At present, the game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive. However, considering that Ghost of Tsushima eventually made its way to PC, there’s a strong possibility that Ghost of Yōtei could receive a PC port later down the line.

Can You Pre-Order Ghost of Yōtei?

Based on past trends, pre-order bonuses are likely to be revealed down the road, much like what was offered for Ghost of Tsushima.
A New Protagonist, A Fresh Story
In a PlayStation blog post following the State of Play reveal, Sucker Punch shared insights into the direction of the new game, stating their goal of crafting something “fresh yet familiar.” To move beyond Jin Sakai’s legacy, Ghost of Yōtei introduces a new protagonist, Atsu.
“At Sucker Punch, we’re fascinated by origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it means for a different warrior to don the Ghost mask and forge a new legend,” said Andrew Goldfarb, senior communications manager at the studio. “This vision brought us to Ghost of Yōtei—a brand-new protagonist, an untold story, and an unexplored region of Japan to discover.”
Atsu is portrayed by Erika Ishii, an actress known for her work in Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and BioWare’s upcoming RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
What Do We Know About the Story?
While specifics regarding the plot remain scarce, the trailer offers some intriguing hints. A mysterious figure mentions that people venture to northern Japan “to disappear,” yet Atsu appears to be in pursuit of something—or someone. Another chilling line reveals that “every Ronin here is hunting you,” suggesting that the protagonist will be relentlessly pursued. While many details remain under wraps, the teaser has sparked curiosity about what’s to come.

Where Does Ghost of Yōtei Take Place?
Sucker Punch has confirmed that Ghost of Yōtei takes place more than 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, set in the year 1603.
“Our story unfolds in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei,” the blog details. “A towering peak in the heart of Ezo, a region now recognized as Hokkaido.”
The new setting is described as being filled with “unexpected dangers,” offering a stark contrast to the structured samurai clans that once ruled Tsushima. From the footage shown so far, Ghost of Yōtei appears to feature a richly detailed environment, with sprawling grassy fields and vast, snowy landscapes.
Ghost of Yōtei is poised to continue Sucker Punch’s tradition of delivering a stunning open-world experience. Now, all that remains is to wait for an official release date.
