The „father of FPS games” himself claims it.
There has been a lawsuit going for a while between Zenimax (who owns Bethesda, as well as John Carmack‘s former workplace, id Software) and Carmack, who has created several memorable games (such as Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, or Quake – all of them were essential in the FPS genre’s evolution), but since moved towards virtual reality. The lawsuit was happening because Zenimax claimed Carmack has taken his work (owned by Zenimax) from id Software to Oculus, causing copyright infringement in the process.
Carmack wrote the following on Twitter: „My personal legal disputes are over. Zenimax has fully satisfied their obligations to me from the purchase of id Software, and we have released all claims against each other. (The appeal for Oculus still goes forward).” The sentence in the brackets refer to Oculus having to pay 500 million dollars to Zenimax (which since has been halved due to the infringement not being significant), but they want to reduce the copyright infringement penalty lower.
Zenimax is also fighting against Samsung in the court, too. According to The Verge, „Carmack secretly brought Oculus (and former ZeniMax) employee Matt Hooper into id Software’s offices to develop an „attack plan” for mobile VR, which Oculus would later take to Samsung. The Samsung Gear VR was also built on some of the same code as the Oculus Rift.” That’s a different story, though…
