It seems FromSoftware isn’t working on the games we thought they would do!
Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of the company (who was also involved with the Souls and Bloodborne games), was interviewed by 4Gamer, where he explained what he meant in June 2016 when he said they were working on 3.5 games. The 0.5 was for Déraciné on the PlayStation VR; the rest are for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, as well as two unannounced games. Miyazaki explained that Dark Souls Remastered and Metal Wolf Chaos XD are not part of this list, as they were asked by Bandai Namco and Devolver Digital, respectively, to make them.
The unannounced games do not include King’s Field, which was one of their previous major franchises in their past: „The King’s Field series was heavily dependent on [Naotoshi] Jin (a previous CEO, the „brainchild” of the series). Huge parts of the series, much more than you’d think, were shaped by his personality and input so a new King’s Field game without him wouldn’t have the same appeal.” About the Bloodborne easter egg in Déraciné (which we discussed before), Miyazaki said the following: „I’m sorry for getting everyone’s hopes up, but we only put in those Easter eggs for fun. Many people on Déraciné’s staff, and of course myself, really love Bloodborne, so we wanted to put references to it… But we went overboard. We’re reflecting on it.”
So FromSoftware is unlikely to work on either a new King’s Field or a Bloodborne sequel. But what could they make then…?
