A cryptic message on Instagram from one of its developers.
“Today I will do something that I have never had the opportunity to do in any other Gears of War videogame”, has been the Instagram post of Rod Fergusson, boss of the Gears of War franchise in the Xbox Game Studio. The image is also not very illustrative and does not seem to have anything to do with the expected Gears 5: it shows a screen with two numbers, 73 and 3, but nothing else in the cryptic message.
What will the developer refer to? Will it be time to wait until E3 to solve the mystery? Gears 5 was one of the most important video games shown by Microsoft in the last Los Angeles event. It was known that Kait, one of the protagonists of Gears of War 4 would fall into the hands of the enemy and that the location would change to an icy environment in which a new threat would haunt the CGO, again on the warpath on the planet Sera.
The picture in question presents the number 73 next to the number 3, which has led some Gears of War fans to speculate that the numbers signify a player counter of some kind attached to a battle royale mode for the fifth numbered entry in the series. Something similar has been surmised before, with a rumor that circulated prior to E3 2018 having insinuated that The Coalition would announce a Gears of War Battle Royale title at the annual expo. This never came to pass, so perhaps the battle royale feature has been saved as a mode for GoW5.
Still, whatever Fergusson has planned linked to this secret new feature that’s potentially in relation to Gears of War 5, it wouldn’t be the first instance of The Coalition sharing details in regards to fresh features for the sequel. As it so happens, the studio officially revealed a new character a while back named “Fahz Chutani” who will come equipped with a new Lancer variant in the followup, and the company also teased Gears of War 5 will have a new enemy type called the Warden.
