Let’s just say that the fans do not appreciate how Psyonix, the developers of Rocket League, has been acquired by Epic Games, who also happens to push its Steam-competitor Epic Games Store…
One of the biggest surprises of the week was that Epic Games will en bloc acquire Psyonix (which transaction should happen by the end of the month), whose Rocket League has been a huge hit everywhere it showed up (PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch). The vehicular football game is widely successful. The fans or at least those who dislike the spread of the Epic Games Store are not that happy, though…
On Steam, since May 1, no less than 2700 negative reviews came for the otherwise entertaining game. The reviews are still showing an overall very positive rating, though, as Valve is ignoring the „off-topic review activities,” or, in other words, it has created an „anti-bomb shield.” „This time range [May 1-May 3] has been marked as containing an abnormal set of reviews that we believe are largely unrelated to the likelihood that you would enjoy the product,” the image below says.
There’s a review by the player who has spent no less than nineteen hundred hours on Rocket League. He praises Psyonix’ game for multiple paragraphs, but he gives a negative rating by ending „You have sold your honour[, Psyonix.]” But why this sudden review bombing? It’s simple: nor Epic Games, neither Psyonix seems to clarify what will happen to the Steam version of Rocket League after the vehicular football shows up on the Epic Games Store by the end of the year. (We previously discussed it in the acquisition post – it does look suspicious….)
So, there’s Tim Sweeney’s, or should we say, Damocles’ sword lingering above the Steam version of Rocket League.
